The Respiratory Tract

The respiratory system extends from the nose and mouth to the alveoli within the lungs.

The upper respiratory tract consists of the nose, nasal cavity and pharynx. It is responsible for:

  • the collection and delivery of air to the lungs
  • warming, filtering and humidifying air.

The lower respiratory tract includes the larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles and alveoli.
