Shortness of Breath
Treatment Protocols
All Patients
- Basic Support Protocol
- Position patient upright and provide support, otherwise let patient adopt most comfortable position.
- Commence IPPV if respirations and inadequate, there is hypoventilation or decreased conscious state
Asthma
- If diagnosed asthmatic, give SALBUTAMOL via nebuliser with 8 litres per minute oxygen; adults get 5mg in 2.5 mls over 10 mins, children get 5mg in 2.5 mls iver 5 mins.
- If the patient's condition does not improve, repeat salbutamol as above
- If the patient's condition still does not improve, consult with Hospital, Local Medical Doctor, CSO or Paramedic.
The maximal effect of Salbutamol takes place within five to twenty minutes of dosing, though some relief is immediately seen.
Tension Pneumothorax
- Cease IPPV and administer O2 via high concentration mask until chest is decompressed by Doctor or Paramedic.
